Fields of Research

Genetics, cytogenetics, structural and functional organization of polytene chromosomes, genetic content of interbands, bands and puffs, chromatin organization in interphase chromosomes, pericentric and intercalary heterochromatin, position effect variegation, transcriptional and replicative activity of polytene chromosomes, hormonal control of genes activity in the salivary gland cells of Drosophila

Scientific Results

The main area of investigations is molecular and genetic organization of polytene chromosomes of Drosophila as a model of interphase chromosome of eukaryote. In his works the concept of dynamic chromomere organization of chromosomes was raised and proved experimentally. He predicted and demonstrated cytogenetic and molecular anatomy of individual chromomere, showed its polygeny and functional independence of the genes being its parts. He obtained the evidence of transcriptional activity of interchromomeres and cloned DNA sequence of interchromomere region using P-element mediated transformation. He formulated the idea of heterochromatic regions as a system of highly repressed parts of genome. He discovered the genes controlling both hormonal induction the genes and structure and replication of chromosomes, he described the components of the system of genetic silencing of the early embryogenesis genes and the genes under position effect variegation. He discovered the gene clusters with coordinated replication and expression ion the genome of Drosophila. He elaborated the concept of functional organization of interphase chromosomes and chromomeres. He developed the idea of puffing as a base of differential expression of genes, described the puff spectrums in development and the mechanisms of hormonal control. He pioneered the molecular analysis of the cloned puff, controlled by ecdysteron, demonstrated the complex organization of gene there placed; he formulated the idea of intercalary heterochromatin as highly repressed chromosome regions and described its parameters. He grounded the idea of position effect variegation mechanism, functioning as a result of DNA compactization under influence of inactive heterochromatin
